  • Occupation/Profession: Served as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia from 1853-1861 and returned to that position under the Confederacy.
  • Other Notable Service and/or Elected Offices: Virginia Senate (1866-1867)
    Was the Democrat Party candidate for U.S. Senate in 1835 , but failed to win election in the General Assembly.
    In 1836, he declined a nomination for Governor due to his wife’s illness and poor health.

    He also served in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829–1830, Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850 and the Virginia Secession Convention of 1861.
