  • Bio: Born at “Stratford”, Westmoreland County, Va., January 20, 1732. Died at “Chantilly”, Westmoreland County, Va., June 19, 1794. Buried in the family burial ground at the “Burnt House” field, “Mount Pleasant”, Westmoreland County, Va. Richard Henry Lee of Westmoreland County was the son of Governor Thomas Lee of “Stratford” and Hannah Ludwell, daughter of Philip and Hannah (Harrison) Ludwell. He left Wakefield Academy at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, in 1752, and studied at Chantilly near Paris, France. He was a member of the House of Burgesses, 1758-75, and organized the Westmoreland Association, writing its resolutions opposing the Stamp Act, 1766. He was a justice of the peace for Westmoreland County in 1770; originator and member of the Committee of Correspondence, 1773; member of the Virginia Conventions of 1774, 1775 and 1776; the Continental Congress, 1774-79, 1784-87 (President, 1774); offered the resolution from which the Declaration of independence was formulated; Signer of the Declaration of Independence; signer of the Articles of Confederation, 1778; member of the House of Delegates, 1777, 1780-85; and United States Senator, 1789-92, He married firstly, December 3, 1757, Anne Aylett (died December 12, 1768), daughter of Captain William and Elizabeth (Eskridge) Aylett, Jr., and secondly, in 1769, Mrs. Anne (Gaskins) Pinckard, widow of Thomas Pinckard and daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Eustace) Gaskins of “Gascony”, Northumberland County, Va.
