  • Bio: Born in Fincastle, Botetourt County, May 20, 1878. Died in Hampton, Va., November 15, 1960. Buried in St. Johns Cemetery, Hampton, Va. Harry R. Houston of Elizabeth City County was the son of Rutherford Roland and Margaret (Steele) Houston. His father was a Presbyterian minister and part-time professor at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. He was educated at Hampden-Sydney College, A. B., 1899. He was owner-editor of the Hampton Monitor. He was a member of the House of Delegates, representing Elizabeth City and Accomack Counties (and Hampton), 1906-1910, Elizabeth City County (and Hampton), 1912-20, 1924-25. He was Commissioner of Fisheries, 1926-30. He married, December 20, 1905, Elizabeth Egerton Watkins, daughter of James A. and Mary Bassett (Whiting) Watkins of Old Point Comfort.

    While he was Speaker of the House, the Clerk was JOHN W. WILLIAMS.
