  • Education: Studied law under George Wythe, post-Revolution, at William & Mary (circa 1785)
  • Military Service: In 1781, at age 18, joined his uncle Colonel William Preston’s rifle company and was appointed an ensign (lieutenant) under General Nathaniel Green in the Continental Army.

    Although he opposed war with Britain in 1812 he led the militia as a brigadier general, helping to shore up defenses around Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

    During War of 1812, at age 49, appointed brigadier general of 3rd Brigade, Virginia Militia and commanded troops in southwest Virginia
