  • Bio: Born at “Spring Forest”, Spotsylvania County, Va., January 16, 1800, Died at Green Branch”, Spotsylvania County, Va., May 15, 1861 Buried in family graveyard at “Green Branch”, Spotsylvania County, Va. Oscar M. Crutchfield of Spotsylvania County was the son of Colonel Stapleton and Elizabeth Lewis (Minor) Crutchfield. He was a major in the State Militia; commissioned justice of the peace, August 15, 1825; member of the House of Delegates, 1834-43, 1850-61; sheriff, 1838-42; and judge of the county court, 1852-61. It has been said that he presided over the deliberations of the House “with a felicity of administrative vigor rarely surpassed.” He entertained General Layfayette in Fredericksburg in 1824, and was entertained by him in his home near Paris during a trip to Europe, 1825-26. He was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, A.F. & A.M., 1840-42. He married, October 24, 1833, Susan Elizabeth Gatewood, daughter of Dr. William Kemp and Barbara (Minor) Gatewood of “Ben Lomond”, Essex County. There is no known portrait of him. While he was Speaker of the House, the Clerks were GEORGE WYTHE MUNFORD, ST. GEORGE TUCKER, and WILLIAM FITZHUGH GORDON, JR.
