His parents were Peter Johnston (born in Edinburgh, Scotland) and Martha (Butler) Rogers, widow of Captain Thomas Rogers of the British Navy.
His mother-in-law, Lucy Henry Wood, was the sister of Patrick Henry.
Peter Johnson succeeded Abraham B. Venable who was elected to the U.S. Senate during the 1803-1804 session.

Peter Johnston, Jr. of Prince Edward County was the son of Peter Johnston (born in Edinburgh, Scotland) and his wife, Martha (Butler) Rogers, widow of Captain Thomas Rogers of the British Navy. He was the father of General Joseph E. Johnston, C. S. A. He was educated by private Scottish teachers and studied for the ministry at Hampden Sydney College. He left college and joined Lee”s Legion, 1780. During the Revolutionary War, he served as adjutant, captain, and later brigadier general of militia. After the war Johnston resumed his education, but in the field of law. He was a member of the House of Delegates, 1792-94, 1798-1808, 18 10-11. He was Judge of the General Court and Superior Court of Law for the Thirteenth Circuit, February I, 1811, assigned to Prince Edward District and exchanged for the District of Southwest Virginia. The reason for the exchange is said to have been that Prince Edward was becoming so thickly settled that judge Johnston thought hunting would be better in the far southwest. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He married firstly, June 16, 1788, Mary Wood, daughter of Colonel Valentine and Lucy Henry (sister of Patrick Henry) Wood of Goochland County, and secondly, December 3, 1828, Anne Bernard, daughter of John and Henningham (Carrington) Bernard of Buckingham County.
