- Military Service: Larkin Smith entered the Revolutionary War as a private in a company of minutemen, November 1775; cadet, 6th Virginia Regiment, February 10, 1776; cornet, 4th Regiment Continental Light Dragoons, August 1, 1777; lieutenant, September 4, 1778; captain, April 1, 1780, and served until the close of the war. Resigned as Colonel of the Regiment of Dragoons, 1807.

- Bio: Born at “Rickahock”, King and Queen County, Va., about 1757. Died in Fredericksburg, Va., September 28, 1813. Larkin Smith of King and Queen County was the son of John and Mary (Chew) Smith. He entered the Revolutionary War as a private in a company of minute men, November, 1775; cadet 6th Virginia Regiment, February 10, 1776; cornet 4th Regiment, Continental Light Dragoons, August 1, 1777; lieutenant, September 4, 1778; captain, April 1, 1780, and served to the close of the war; and was distinguished for his gallant and meritorious service. He was appointed justice of the peace for King and Queen County, September 30, 1784, He was a member of the House of Delegates, 1784-85, 1788-90, 1792-94, 1797-98, 17991803. He took the oath as a member of the Privy Council, June 7, 1794. On October 7, 1794, he and Edmund Harrison, who succeeded him as Speaker, reported to the Governor on the condition of the State Treasury. He resigned as Colonel of the Regiment of Dragoons in 1807, and was appointed Collector for the port of Norfolk. He served as such from October 12, 1807, until his death. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He has been described as an accomplished gentleman, a virtuous politician, and an inflexible officer. He married firstly, April 21, 1781, Mary Eleanor Hill. Secondly, he married, May 25, 1804, Sophia Ann Taliaferro (widow of Benjamin Taliaferro) at the home of her brother, Littleton WaIler Tazewell, who was Governor of Virginia, 1834-36. She was a daughter of judge Henry and Dorothea Elizabeth (Walter) Tazewell of Williamsburg. There is no known portrait of him, While he was Speaker of the House, the Clerk was WILLIAM WIRT.
